Tuesday, August 19, 2008 The minute I saw Butterick Pattern 4740, I knew the time had come. I was ready to do something with the three yards of silk shantung given to me more than 20 years ago by a friend who was moving to another state. |
Monday, August 18, 2008 Adult education classes are generally one of the best deals in town. Phil Getchell will once again teach a genealogy course for Bangor Adult Education 6:30-9 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 18-Oct. 30. |
While away the hours conferrin' with the flowers Monday, August 18, 2008 It’s midsummer again and it's not going to last any longer than it did before. |
Saturday, August 16, 2008 I have my own version of Christmas in July. Every year, as midsummer turns to late summer, the packages start arriving, usually by FedEx. Some are big, others are small, and there's so much bubble wrap inside that shaking doesn't do any good. Not that it matters. I already know what's inside: cosmetics. And lots of them. |
Friday, August 15, 2008 Last week I purchased a pair of comfortable black and purple slip-on sneakers for five bucks at the mall. I didn't buy them because they matched any particular outfit, or because I have a fondness for cheap-o Chuck Taylor rip-offs; I bought them because I'm planning ahead for the American Folk Festival. |
Tuesday, August 12, 2008 Many of us who were brought up by mothers who sewed remember them engaging in what they referred to as "making over" a garment. |
Monday, August 11, 2008 It was wonderful to visit the Abbot Historical Society on Abbot Day, July 27, and see the folders and notebooks of family information that have been given to the museum. |
Saturday, August 09, 2008 Iinitially had planned to call this column 'hot fun in the summertime.' Then it started to pour. Oh, look, it stopped. Sun again. Hooray! Oh, wait, now it's hailing. And the power went out. And was that a pig that just sailed by the window? |
Friday, August 8, 2008 Naming your band after the Norse god of trickery and change is kind of like walking around with a 'kick me' sign on the back of your shirt: you're just asking for it. "He’s the god of mischief. He’s good, and he’s bad. He’s a catalyst for change. We identify with him big-time," said John Taylor, vocalist for Loki, the southern Maine-based alternative rock band. |
Tuesday, August 05, 2008 Most of us are inclined to use whatever is handy for a bookmark - a bit of paper torn from an old envelope, a tissue, a gum wrapper, a small photograph or even a $1 bill. But I prefer handmade bookmarks, which surprise me with their beauty each time I open my book to the page I left off reading. |
Monday, August 04, 2008 My thought is that if you really want a library to have a book, you should give it to them. |
Saturday, August 2, 2008 I spent last weekend doing the can-can. Now, I’m no Elaine Benes, but everyone who knows me knows I' not much of a dancer (and the speakers at Geddy's — back when it actually was Geddy's don't count). So I can assure you I was not doing high kicks in my living room. Nor was I wearing petticoats. |
Friday, August 01, 2008 The Beltek Festival, set for this weekend at a 14-acre farm in the Waldo County town of Belmont, is part of a tradition that stretches all the way back to that big festival 40 years ago at Yasgur's farm. Tons of progressive and fun music and art in a big field in the middle of the summer. |
Tuesday, July 29, 2008 Sooner or later, those who make arts and crafts want to earn money creating handmade items. But how does one go about doing that? |
Saturday, July 26, 2008 It's bigger than a breadbox. But way smaller than a Hummer. It's as stylish as a Marc Jacobs bag. But, unlike said bag, it will get you to work and back. The fastest can go up to 100 miles per hour. But the most efficient can get up to 100 miles per gallon. |
Friday July 25, 2008 A few years ago, Garrett Soucy had some demons to exorcise. The record of how he did that is available for your listening pleasure on his new album, 'Sunlight in Architecture,' officially released last week on Long Ago Light Records. |
Second time around Saturday, June 23, 2007 If you're game for value, these thrift and consignment shops in the area can turn you bargani-hunting grounds into Elysian fields |
Threads of culture: Wabanaki textiles Tuesday, June 13, 2006 Bruce Bourque, chief archaeologist and curator of ethnography at the Maine State Museum in Augusta, is “learning another branch of anthropology,” he said in a talk he gave May 18 at Bangor Public Library. His learning process will culminate in a book to accompany an exhibit, “Uncommon Threads: Wabanaki Textiles, Clothing and Costume,” set to open at the museum in 2007. |
