May 14 Letters to the Editor

May 13 Letters to the Editor

Since I am old enough to remember when some elected Republicans were moderates, I was disappointed to read in the May 5 BDN that at the state Republican convention, Sen. Susan Collins shared the stage with right-wing columnist Cal Thomas.

May 9 Letters to the Editor

For an acknowledged man of the written word, Mr. King is sadly bereft when it comes to orally expressing his views.
May 8 Letters to the Editor

I am one of the jurors in the war protesters case 'Jury acquits six in protest,' (BDN, May 1). In the article, District Attorney Chris Almy said our not guilty verdict demonstrated our disgust with the Iraq war and our senators.

May 5 Letters to the Editor

The four page U.S. Navy recruiting insert in a recent BDN really impressed me. On its cover was the statement, "What could make a mom prouder than having a son accepted into an elite engineering program?"
May 3 Letters to the Editor

Kathleen Parker (BDN, April 23) said Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the U.S. has afforded the American media and others an opportunity to remind us that the Catholic Church is 'out of step' with modern times.
May 2 Letters to the Editor

In response to Alex Shapero's column (BDN, April 22): Mr. Shapero called Bill Slavick's BDN April 14 column in regard to the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty a 'misstatement.' Mr. Shapero failed to mention that when the Israeli pilots in jets blasted the American flag off the warship (a noncombat communications ship, actually) the crew raised an enormous holiday flag. It was fired on as well.
May 1 Letters to the Editor

The tribes of Maine, like other federally recognized tribes throughout the United States, possess inherent rights of self-government.
April 30 Letters to the Editor

The BDN recently printed a letter mongering war with Iran, the grounds for which being, in a nutshell, 'oppression of minorities and women,' 'blatant disregard of the United Nations,' 'refuses to allow U.N. inspectors full access,' 'threat to the safety and well-being of the U.S. forces' and 'unreliable and untrustworthy.'
April 29 Letters to the Editor

Responding to the letter by James H. Tweedie Sr., 'Aborted Generation,' (BDN, April 18): Economist and winner of a John Bates Clark Medal Stephen Levitt attributes the dramatic drop in crime of the 1990s to the legalization of abortion.
April 28 Letters to the Editor

Last election TABOR was defeated thanks in part to Gov. John Baldacci's promise of no new taxes. Now we find that the governor has failed to keep his word and has signed a massive new tax package in order to try to keep his failed Dirigo health plan afloat.
April 26 Letters to the Editor

The April 14 article regarding former Gov. John Reed of Fort Fairfield was right on track. I would like to add to the personality of Gov. Reed.
April 25 Letters to the Editor

In response to 'Allowances: In good behavior and bad?' by Jeff Opdyke (BDN, April 12), I believe our household has discovered a solution that will appeal to many parents in similar situations regarding money and their children.
April 24 Letters to the Editor

It makes me sick to observe what is going on now in the Democratic Party.
April 23 Letters to the Editor

Dr. Steele’s column, "Learning from the ladies lavatory" (BDN, April 8), was amazing on several counts. It would be amazing for a man to be asked to enter a women’s lavatory, and amazing to find a woman there in labor.
April 22 Letters to the Editor

April 21 Letters to the Editor

April 19 Letters to the Editor

Doesn't the Christian Civil League of Maine have anything better to do with its time? The majority of Maine citizens have made it clear they won’t discriminate. Now it appears that the league wants to ban adoptions by gay couples.
April 18 Letters to the Editor

On March 6, the Paycheck Fairness Act was reintroduced in Congress by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn. According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data, women continue to receive unequal pay for the same work; on average women earn 77 cents for every $1 a man earns.
April 17 Letters to the Editor

Andrew Yarrow's column, 'Early retirement is unpatriotic' (BDN, April 8), says that retiring at 55, 62 or even 65 is 'profoundly selfish and unpatriotic.'
Tuesday letters

Nuclear power may be the only way to fuel the worldwide industrial economy in a populous future while avoiding climate changes, interruptions in foreign fuel supplies and burning of petroleum that is too valuable to burn.
